12 November 2018 – From 13 to 15 November, Cybersprint participates in the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona and the Dutch trade mission aligned with this event. Together with the municipality of The Hague, Cybersprint will present the Smart City Cyber Resilience Monitoring platform. Within this platform we continuously detect digital threats in Smart City infrastructures, as a result of connecting technical innovations to the internet.
As the Netherlands is a compact and densely populated society, it requires to be at the forefront of Smart City developments. The Dutch approach is to find public-private solutions through cooperation between society, private enterprise and science. One such case is that the municipality of The Hague sought cooperation with Cybersprint to develop a monitoring tool to detect all insecure Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Security within of Smart Cities
Smart Cities offer many opportunities to improve both the economic development and the standard of living for citizens, but it also has an increasing down-side of a potential digital breakdown causing societal disruption. While we are creating more complex systems within our Smart Cities, the threat of cyber security attacks becomes more relevant. Technical innovations are increasingly being connected to the internet (IoT). When an insufficiently secured device is connected to the internet, it serves as a potential entry point for a cyberattack.
Not only can critical infrastructure be targeted, such as the public energy or water supply, but devices with inadequate digital defences pose a threat to personal privacy too. Security cameras in public places like railway stations and restaurants can be hacked to remotely stream recordings, for instance. Devices meant to keep people safe can consequently become a source of problems.
Building Resilient Cities: Monitoring the Smart City security
Together with the municipality of The Hague, Cybersprint is developing the Smart City Cyber Resilience Monitoring platform. Within this platform we continuously detect digital threats in Smart City infrastructures caused by connecting technical innovations to the internet. All detected insecure devices are instantly reported to the network provider, along with corresponding mitigation suggestions. The platform visualises the real-time cyber risks (IoT + Web) present in the city. By automatically mapping and categorising the entire footprint, awareness is increased and attacks can be prevented. With Smart City Monitoring you can protect the city’s digital infrastructures from cyber threats by real-time automatic detection of insufficiently secured IoT-devices and sensors connected to this system.
